Is Rocky Point Safe? An Owner's Honest Answer and Travel Checklist

The Short Answer

Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco) is a long-established tourist town that Arizona families have visited for generations, and the large majority of trips are uneventful. Like anywhere in Mexico, it is not risk free. The best approach is to check the current U.S. State Department advisory for Sonora, drive in daylight on the main route, carry Mexican car insurance, and use the same common sense you would on any trip.

Read What the U.S. State Department Says About Sonora and Puerto Peñasco

In its Mexico travel advisory issued August 11, 2026, the U.S. State Department rates Mexico overall at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution and Sonora at Level 3: Reconsider Travel due to crime and kidnapping.

For Puerto Peñasco specifically, the advisory says:

  • U.S. government employees may travel between Puerto Peñasco and the Lukeville-Sonoyta port of entry using Federal Highway 8 only, and may not use any other route.
  • U.S. government employees may not use taxis, public buses, or ride-share apps in Puerto Peñasco.

What that means for you: cross at Lukeville, drive Highway 8 directly to Rocky Point and back, and plan to get around town in your own vehicle. Read the current advisory at travel.state.gov before every trip, because it changes.

You can also enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts.

Drive from the Border Safely

Drive Highway 8 in Daylight

The standard route from Arizona crosses at Lukeville and follows Highway 8 from Sonoyta to Rocky Point, about an hour. Stay on Highway 8, avoid alternate routes through Sonora, and plan your drive for daylight. U.S. consular officials have repeatedly advised daylight-only travel on this route.

Pass Through Military and Police Checkpoints

Mexico has added National Guard and military personnel along the border, including in Sonoyta, so expect inspections and checkpoints. Slow down, follow instructions, be polite, and have your passport, entry documents, and insurance ready. Checkpoints are routine.

Handle a Traffic Stop Calmly

  • Pull over safely and stay calm.
  • Ask for the officer's name and the reason for the stop.
  • Ask for a written citation if one is issued.
  • Keep your insurance documents in the car.

Stay Safe in Town and on the Beach

The risks that actually injure visitors are usually not crime. They are:

  • The ocean and tides. The incoming tide moves fast across the flats. Check the tide chart.
  • Sun and heat. Summer highs reach the high 90s °F. Hydrate and rest at midday.
  • Alcohol plus water or vehicles. Do not mix them.
  • ATVs. Wear helmets and follow local rules. ATV guide
  • Stingrays. Shuffle your feet in shallow water.

Avoid Rental and Money Scams

Fake rental listings appear regularly in Facebook groups. Never wire money to someone you cannot verify. Read our rental booking checklist.

Save Emergency Numbers and Know Where to Get Medical Care

  • Emergencies: dial 911 in Mexico.
  • Your host: save Erick's number, (520) 261-1537, before you cross the border.
  • Medical care: Rocky Point has clinics and the Red Cross for emergencies. Ask us for the closest options when you book.

Serious medical issues are often handled in Arizona, about 4 hours away. Travel medical insurance that covers Mexico is a good idea.
