Things to Do in Puerto Peñasco: A Tide-Smart Guide from a Rocky Point Owner

Last reviewed

Puerto Peñasco, which most Arizonans call Rocky Point, is best known for its beaches on the Sea of Cortez, fresh shrimp, sportfishing, sunset cruises, ATV riding, and some of the biggest tides in North America. Those tides shape almost every activity here, so the smartest way to plan your trip is around the tide chart. This guide covers what to do, when to do it, and what we would skip.

Plan Your Days Around the Tides

Rocky Point usually has two high tides and two low tides a day, and the difference can exceed 20 feet during spring tides. Check the Puerto Peñasco tide chart for your dates, then use this table.

Sunset and Dolphin Cruises

Evening cruises leave from the harbor near the Malecón and range from lively party boats to quiet catamarans. Dolphins are a common sighting, and some tours visit Bird Island to see sea lions. See our sunset cruise guide.

Sportfishing Charters

Half-day and full-day charters go after species like corvina, sea bass, grouper, and yellowtail depending on the season. A Mexican fishing license is required. See our fishing guide.

Kayaks, Paddleboards, and Banana Boats

Cholla Bay at high tide is calm and perfect for kayaks and paddleboards. Banana boats and parasailing run off Sandy Beach in busy seasons.

Spend a Day at Sandy Beach

The resort strip has the widest sand and the gentlest water for swimming, plus vendors, banana boats, and beach bars. Sandy Beach guide

Explore Tide Pools in Cholla Bay

At low tide, Cholla Bay drains to reveal pools full of hermit crabs, snails, small fish, and sometimes octopus. It is the best free activity in Rocky Point for kids. Cholla Bay guide

Ride ATVs and UTVs

Rentals are available around town, and many visitors tow their own. Rules on where you can ride change, so check before you go. ATV rental guide

Explore Town

Walk the Malecón and Fish Market

The Malecón is Rocky Point's waterfront promenade in the Old Port, lined with seafood stands, souvenir shops, and restaurants. The fish market is the place to buy fresh shrimp and fish to cook at your rental. Go in the morning for the best selection.

Eat Shrimp and Street Tacos

Rocky Point is famous for its shrimp. Try them grilled, in tacos, in cocktails, or boiled at your rental. See where we eat.

Shop for Souvenirs

Look for hand-painted Talavera pottery, silver, blankets, and local vanilla. Bargaining is normal at street stalls, not in stores.

Play a Round of Golf

Rocky Point has golf with views of the Sea of Cortez. Course status changes, so see our golf guide for current courses.

Take a Day Trip

El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve

About an hour north of town, this UNESCO World Heritage site has giant volcanic craters, lava fields, and huge sand dunes. Bring plenty of water, fuel up before you go, and avoid midday heat in summer. Check the reserve's visitor center hours and entry fees before you go.

The Estuaries

Estuaries east of town, such as Estero Morúa, are good for birdwatching, kayaking, and fresh oysters.

Skip These (Our Honest Take)

  • Parking on the beach at low tide. The tide comes back faster than you think, and cars get flooded every year.
  • Driving on the tidal flats. It is not worth getting stuck when the tide comes in.
  • Lighting fireworks at your rental. They are sold in town, but setting them off can get you removed from your rental.

Stay Close to It All

Cholla Bay Vista is about 10 minutes from Sandy Beach, 15 to 20 minutes from the Malecón, and about 100 feet from the water in Cholla Bay. It sleeps 10, has a garage for RVs, boats, and ATVs, and welcomes pets.
