Tucson to Rocky Point: The Highway 86 Route, Drive Time, and Stops
Last reviewed
I'm Erick, the owner of Cholla Bay Vista, and I live in Tucson, so this is the route I drive. From Tucson, the most direct way to Rocky Point is west on Arizona Highway 86 through Sells to Why, then south through Lukeville into Mexico.

Follow the Route
1. Tucson to Three Points and Sells (about 60 miles, 1 hour)
Head west on Ajo Way, which becomes AZ-86. Three Points has the last larger gas stations near Tucson. Sells is the capital of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
2. Sells to Why on Highway 86 (about 65 miles, 1 hour 10 minutes)
This is the remote stretch: a two-lane road through the Tohono O'odham Nation with few services and spotty cell coverage. Drive respectfully, follow posted speed limits, and watch for livestock and wildlife on the road, especially at dawn and dusk.
3. Why to Lukeville and the Border (about 35 miles, 35 minutes)
At Why, you join the Phoenix route. Head south on AZ-85 through Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument to Lukeville. Why is the last place with gas and restrooms.
4. Sonoyta to Rocky Point on Highway 8 (about 62 miles, 1 hour)
After crossing into Sonoyta, follow the signs for Puerto Peñasco. Drive in daylight. See our Lukeville border guide.
Plan for Fuel and Cell Coverage Gaps
- Leave Tucson with a full tank.
- Expect long stretches without cell service between Sells and Why.
- Download offline maps and save your rental address before you leave.
- Carry extra water, especially in summer.
Avoid Night Driving Risks
Highway 86 has no streetlights, few services, and open-range livestock. Cattle and wildlife on the road are a real hazard after dark. Plan to drive this stretch and the Mexican side in daylight.
