2. Gila Bend to Ajo and Why (about 55 miles, 1 hour)
AZ-85 continues south through open desert to Ajo, a small town with gas, groceries, and food. Why, just south, is the last stop with services before the border. Top off your tank and use the restroom here.
3. Why to Lukeville (about 35 miles, 35 minutes)
The road passes through Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Watch your speed and watch for wildlife. Cell service is limited in stretches.
4. Cross at Lukeville into Sonoyta
Southbound crossings are usually quick. Have your documents and Mexican insurance ready. See our Lukeville border guide.
5. Sonoyta to Rocky Point on Highway 8 (about 62 miles, 1 hour)
Follow the signs for Puerto Peñasco on Highway 8. Drive in daylight, follow the speed limits, and be ready for a possible checkpoint.
Leave at the Right Time to Beat the Border Line

|---|---|---|
| Southbound (into Mexico) | Weekday mornings | Friday afternoons on holiday weekends |

Since 2025, increased Mexican security checks at Sonoyta have also caused occasional long southbound lines, sometimes over two hours at peak times. Check live wait times at bwt.cbp.gov, and remember Lukeville is open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. (with extended Friday hours in some seasons).
